Crazy request, but I bought the black Gabe shirt a month ago and still haven’t worn it. How are you styling yours?

Expand full comment
Asta / Aastha's avatar

I can definitely do a post with that. Tell me what blockers you run into with it? Does it feel too big?

Expand full comment
Deborah's avatar

Yes, it feels huge. It’s my first Gabe. I’ve tried the Tibi tricks of tying it in the back or doing a half tuck, but still haven’t got it quite right.

I didn't make the live session but caught the recording - thank you! I think you've solved the conundrum of a Tibi skirt that I love to much to let go of but can never seem to get the styling quite right. T-shirts are the answer! I was wondering, having been VERY intrigued at the mention of hijab magnets, if you would do a small post or segment about how you use these for styling? Thanks for all of your advice!

Love this so much!! 💖 And I totally agree (and this has been something I learned the hard way after acquiring too many “versatile”-but-actually-just-basic pieces) that statement pieces are actually easier to style because they have multiple dimensions that you can dial up or down. For me, multiple dimensions = so much easier to create an outfit that has both contrast but cohesion (avoiding the fashion mullet!), versus one-note items where you have to be much more deliberate about combinations.

Yes!! You said it perfectly. Dimensions are what give a piece mileage. A good statement skirt has built-in tension you can either amplify or mute, so you’re never starting from zero. That’s exactly why they’re often easier than the “basics” we’ve all been guilted into buying. Basics CAN be one-note, which means the work falls entirely on you to engineer contrast and cohesion. With a strong piece, the garment does half the talking for you.

Thanks for this video. I appreciate the idea of identifying the qualities (heavy, etc) as you think of styling. I have a few statement skirts that I need to style to make more accesible (okay, many).

The hardest have two sequin straight skirts (one a dark longer pencil skirt, one straight calf length with larger sequins) that are shiny and heavy- do you think I could use some of these tips to make them more wearable? And more accessible?

What are common element words to describe statement clothes that we could work with? Heavy, shiny, structured…

Oh and for sequin skirt specifically, YES YES this will 100% apply. I wear my brown sequinned skirt all the time like this.

I will flesh this out into a full post, but to breakdown a clothing item into it's core elements there are a few things to consider:

1. What is the vibe of the silhouette? Is it ladylike (like my skirt in tis video). Is it more masculine? Is it flowy, or structured?

2. What does the color communicate?

3. What is the visual weight? Does it feel like a 'light' item or a 'heavy' item visually?

4. What does the texture communicate? Does it have any texture? If yes, what kind?

And go from there.

I just finished your video. So much styling looks contrived. The opposite of “effortless.” But you seem to be able to do the same thing and it looks so good. The opposite of contrived. Bravo!
